Crosby could be tourney spoiler
Crosby
Legion Baseball Coach Monte Ellingson believes his team could be the
spoiler heading into the Section 6 tournament that opens today in Watford
City.
"I know our record
isn’t very impressive," Ellingson said, but, "I feel we have
three of the top five pitchers in the region in Cody Roland, Brock Overbo
and Kyle Stephens."
Add to that the fact that
the tournament will mark the first time all season that Crosby has had all
its players on the field at the same time, Ellingson said, and, "We
have the potential to be the spoiler."
Crosby opens the
tournament at 3 p.m. today against Renville County.
A Crosby win would pit
them against the winner of Garrison and Tioga at 10 a.m. Thursday. A loss
pits them against the loser of that game at 12:30 Thursday.
Makoti drew a first round
bye as the number one seed. Number four Ray plays fifth-seeded Watford
City at 10 a.m. today.
Semi final play is slated
for Friday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Championship play is Saturday at noon.
Overbo exhibited his
pitching savvy Thursday at Tioga when he struck out 10 batters en route to
a 13-1 win -- the first district win of the season for Crosby.
Stephens was the star at
the plate as he smacked three hits, including his first home run of the
year. Roland and Austin Dhuyvetter had a pair of hits each.
Stephens went the
distance on the mound in the second game striking out nine batters en
route to another 13-1 win.
Haggin and Justin
Haugland had a pair of hits each.
Tuesday last week Crosby
went to Sherwood to play Renville County, where they were swept by scores
of 7-6 and 14-2.
Crosby started slow in
the first game, falling behind 7-1 after four innings. But they battled
back to come within one run in the last inning before stranding the tying
run on third base to end the rally.
Dane Dhuyvetter went the
distance on the mound, and Overbo and Aaron Windfaldet charted two hits
each.
Windfaldet pitched the
second game but didn’t receive much support from his teammates as they
committed a season high seven errors in the game.
Windfaldet and Haggin had the only Crosby
hits.
